Skateboarding, Media and Arts: The Integrations/Self-Cultivation of Marginalised Youth

With the support of the Creative Forces Program (funded by the Swedish Institute) 7Hills and STPLN will cooperate to explore knowledge about skateboarding as a tool for self-cultivation: we will take a close look at how media tools can support youth in personal growth/capacity building.

7Hills offers a skateboarding program to hundreds of local and refugee-youth each week at the 7Hills Skatepark, a 650m² public park crowdfunded and later built by volunteers in 2016. The park is located in downtown Amman and the ethos of the organisation is to provide a safe space, using skateboarding as the basis for an outlet for creativity and expression.

STPLN is an independent cultural institution which offers space and resources for people with ideas at the intersection of art, design, media, education and technology. The ethos of the organisation is based on participatory culture, nonformal education and learning by doing. STPLN is housed a 2000m² former slipway building, repurposed into workspaces, event venues, workshops and more.

The aim of this project is to co-design a media program for youth that uses skateboarding as a basis. It combines the coaching and outreach experience of the 7Hills team with the non-formal education and participatory design approach of STPLN.
